eng	SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT INDICATOR AS A TOOL FOR SUBURBANIZATION CONTROLLING (AN EXAMPLE FROM THE CITY OF HRADEC KRÁLOVÉ)	Suburbanization has become phenomenon of urbanization in the Czech Republic in the last 10 years (during the period of social and economical transformation). During the communist time there were strict restrictions to sub-urban migration and after the regime collapsed the sub-urban areas started to be under great pressure. Villages and small towns, which lie in the hinterland of large cities, started to grow due to migration from large cities; many new one-family houses were built. The paper focuses on the description of contemporary problems connected to suburbanization and it tries to find suitable tools for towns and cities "size optimization" from the urban, social and also from the environmental and economical points of view. ?Sustainable development indicators? are a tool created by the European Commission which helps towns and cities in monitoring changes towards sustainability. An example can be the European Common Indicator. However, some of those indicators could be also used as a tool for some processes controlling, e.g. suburbanization process. The paper tries to show how the ?sustainable development indicators? could work as a tool for the suburbanization controlling and sustainable urbanization governance in contemporary Czech Republic.
