We asked Grace Addo-Donkoh, graduate of the master study programme Informatics in Public Administration, a few questions to find out what she thinks about studying at FEA UPCE and living in Pardubice.
What was the main reason you decided to study in the Czech Republic?
The primary reason behind my decision to pursue studies in the Czech Republic was the strong recommendation I received from an alumnus. So, I did my research and discovered that the country offers top-notch education that is remarkably affordable. This dual advantage of receiving an excellent education while keeping expenses manageable was a compelling factor that influenced my choice to study in the Czech Republic.
Did you experience any culture shock from moving here?
Coming from a background where "everyone’s business is everyone’s business" the contrast was striking when I encountered a culture that highlighted personal space and privacy. On public transport, for instance, the prevalent practice of individuals keeping to themselves, engrossed in their phones, stood in stark contrast to the lively conversations and interactions I was accustomed to. This distinction in behaviour led to an initial impression of reservedness, which I perceived as an indication of Czechs not being as outgoing or friendly.
What do you like most about studying and living in the Czech Republic?
What I appreciate most is the affordability of the cost of living within the Czech Republic, making it an ideal choice for international students. Moreover, Pardubice’s peaceful and serene environment provides the perfect setting for studies, contributing to a conducive learning atmosphere.
What was your first impression of the Czech Republic and what it is now?
My initial impression of the Czech Republic was a blend of awe and charm. The architecture and historical structures captivated me. However, what stood out to me the most was the briskness of their walk; a marked departure from what I was familiar with. I often found myself asking, “Where is everyone going in such a rush?” Over time, as I settled in, I’ve come to appreciate the energetic pace as a reflection of the people’s sense of urgency and punctuality.
How do you find studying at the Faculty?
Studying at the Faculty has been an enjoyable experience for me. The professors are not only highly knowledgeable but also incredibly approachable, making the learning process engaging and fruitful. I appreciate the structured approach of combining lectures and seminars, as it provides a not only theoretical but practical understanding of the subjects. Erasmus opportunities give full-on international experience. Also, the availability of scholarships for academic achievements serves as a motivating factor, encouraging students to strive for excellence.
Why did you choose this study programme?
As I aspire to be a proficient Systems Engineer, the programme aligns perfectly with my interests and career aspirations, offering a curriculum that resonates deeply with me. The synergy between my personal interests and the programme’s potential to pave the way for a successful future made it a clear and compelling decision.
Do you have a favourite place in Pardubice?
Absolutely! My favourite spot is the riverside behind the faculty. The serene beauty of nature and the atmosphere create the perfect setting for deep introspection and reflection. It’s a haven of peace where I often find solace and inspiration.
What are the benefits of studying at Faculty for your future professional career?
Time will fail me to list all the benefits. The programme’s comprehensive curriculum equips me with essential knowledge and skills directly applicable to my chosen field of becoming Systems Engineer. Furthermore, the opportunity to be taught and engage with astute lecturers provides a unique chance to glean insights from seasoned experts, which enriches both understanding and practical judgment. Also, the Faculty’s emphasis on hands-on learning through seminars translates theoretical knowledge into real-world capabilities. Finally, the approach of teaching and learning by the Faculty has molded me into a competent and adaptable professional, ready to tackle the challenges and seize the opportunities that lie ahead.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Pardubice to other students?
Certainly! I wholeheartedly recommend both the city and the University of Pardubice to prospective students. The city’s tranquil ambiance is ideal for studies, while the faculty and staff’s approachable nature enhances the learning experience. The knowledgeable lecturers offer valuable guidance, and the well-equipped facilities provide a conducive environment to prepare for a successful future.
Do you have a piece of advice for anyone who is considering studying in the Czech Republic?
For those contemplating studying in the Czech Republic, I recommend embracing the unique cultural experience with an open mind. While Czechs may seem reserved at first, they build deep connections over time. Immerse yourself in local customs and be engaging. Actively participate in educational opportunities, and don’t hesitate to seek guidance from professors while developing connections that can enrich both your academic journey and your personal growth.
Do you think you will want to stay and work in Pardubice after your graduation?
Yes, my plan involves working or doing an internship for some months to acquire practical field experience before returning to the classroom for further education. This is to thoroughly equip me before ultimately going back to my home country, where I aspire to contribute significantly towards its development and progress.
