Politické změny změny přinesly mimo jiné nový pohled obyvatel měst na jejich okolí, veřejné prostory nevyjímaje. Jedněmi z prvních kroků nových - demokratických - samospráv byla oprava centrálních náměstí, která během druhé poloviny 20. století ztratila svůj původní lesk a upadla do šedi socialistické výstavby. Tyto kroky byly rovněž podpořeny přístupem státních orgánů, které vypisovaly za tímto účelem dotační programy. Avšak mnoho měst se v přeměně svých veřejných prostor zastavilo na půli cesty. Po prvním kroku, kterým byla fyzická rekonstrukce prostor, totiž nenásledovalo vyhodnocení nových výzev, před kterými stálo (a dodnes stojí) moderní město v rychle se měnící společnosti. Příspěvek je zaměřen na problematiku veřejných prostor ve středně velkých městech (v evropském měřítko kolem 100 tis. obyvatel). Pojednává o hierarchizaci veřejných prostorů ve městech, problematice jejich rekonstrukce e rekonverze v časovém sledu s ostatními rozvojovými aktivitami měst. eng	Public Spaces Transformation in Central European Transition Economy	There came a very turbulent period in the Central and Eastern Europe in the 90´s of the 20th century. Political changes brought also new attitudes of the cities inhabitant to their neighborhoods. As the communist city downtowns lost their beauty from the first decades of the 20th century and felt into the grayness, one of the first steps of the local governments led to downtowns reconstructions. It was supported by the national government by its subsidy politics. But many cities, towns and villages went only half way of the public spaces revitalization. The first step ? physical reconstruction of public spaces ? was not supplemented by the respect to new needs and circumstances that modern city has to face to. The paper is focused on the problematic of the public spaces in the mid-size cities (in European scale ca. 100 thousand inhabitants). It deals with public spaces hierarchy in the cities and with the problematic of reconstruction of the spaces in time. In the practical part it shows an example from the Czech Republic - city of Hradec Králové ? its attitude to the whole problematic.
