eng An analysis of the inclusion of population control policies in the climate change mitigation agenda This study brings to debate the possible effects of population control policies in the sustainable development agenda, particularly concerning the climate change mitigation measures to be implemented by developed and developing countries in order to reduce and stabilize the concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHG) in the atmosphere at levels that would prevent adverse anthropogenic interferences to the climate change. In the first section, authors discuss current projections of population growth worldwide until the year 2100. In the following chapter, the effects of world population growth in the Earth carrying capacity are shown in terms of Human Development Index and ecological footprint (EF). Subsequently, the pros and cons of population control as an additional mechanism for the climate change mitigation agenda are highlighted by means of possible changes in GHG emissions. Differentiated targets in population control mechanisms may result in 43% of global efforts towards climate change mitigation, thus representing a prominent tool for policy-makers. Authors also show by means of a road map with envisaged scenarios and measures involving reduction of GHG emissions and population the sustainable number of inhabitants on Earth by 2100 would be in the range between 4.6 to 4.7 billion only. population growth;climate change;ecological footprint;biocapacity;sustainability;greenhouse gases.
